Phases of Locs

Baby Locs

  • Whether your locs are started with coils, palm rolls, two-strand twist or backcombing they are still babies. Remember to treat your baby locs with lots of TLC and be extra gentle.
  • Do Not shampoo! Use oils sparingly! Keep them covered. Do Not over twist.
  • You may need a dry shampoo with witch hazel for your first several visits.

Baby Phase may last from 2-6 months depending on hair texture.

Teen Locs

  • We all know that teens will be rebellious and have a mind of their own.
  • Teen locs are usually unruly, frizzy, defy gravity, going in all different directions and doing all the things you don’t want them to do.
  • Coils will begin to bud at the ends, Two-strand twist will start to shrink and hairs start to intertwine. Backcombed locs will swell and feel puffy, and shrink a bit.
  • Styling options are limited.

Teen phase can last from 3 months-2 years.

Adult Locs (Mature)

  • This is the phase we all look forward to. Adult Locs are well formed, feel solid and sometimes rough in texture.
  • Hair is fully intertwined to create a beautiful loc from new –growth to ends. (There are many styling options)
  • Locs have dropped and hang down. It’s important to maintain locs regularly for optimum health.
  • Depending on your texture you may have a curls on the ends or bumps throughout your locs.

Adult phase may last from 2-8 years based on the health of your hair.

Elder Locs

  • We love and respect our elders. Elder locs have been through a lot.
  • This is nature-shedding stage, where locs begin to thin out and break off towards the ends. Regular trims will prevent this stage.
  • Deep Conditioners and hot oil treatments are recommended.
  • Colored hair will shed much faster then virgin hair. Shedding may start from 4-8 years.

“Locking your hair is a journey not a destination. Remember to love your locs at every stage of locking.”
